This cosy Cornish cottage is perfect for families and boasts an enclosed south-facing garden with wonderful sea views. Well appointed in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – a haven for botanists, wildlife enthusiasts, beachcombers, climbers, ramblers and watermen – this delightful holiday cottage in Cornwall by the Sea is set in the privately owned, unspoilt 8-acre Vellandreath Valley in Sennen, next to the beach, bordered by a stream and sand dunes, and offers you spectacular panoramic sea views all year round. Inside every room has a sea view in this whitewashed, south-facing fisherman’s cottage, which nestles in the dunes at the rear of the beach just 200 metres away. There’s an attractive, open-plan living room overlooking pretty south-facing walled garden, bordered by a stream. This room has exposed beams and large granite inglenook with ‘Victorian’ wood-burning stove. The kitchen/dining area is fully equipped and is ideal for cosy nights in together sharing a meal. Open-plan stairs lead you to the first floor where you’ll find three pretty bedrooms; one double room with ornate antique iron bed and two further cosy bedrooms one with a single bed and the other a built-in bed. The bathroom has an over-bath shower and toilet. All rooms have rugs on pine floors. The coastline is full of beaches, ranging from safe bathing beaches to secluded coves to wild and rocky places. Some are easily accessible and some less so. Although there are several traditional seaside resorts for family visitors, the area also attracts walkers, naturalists, artists, and anyone seeking a quiet haven, with amenities close by. The sea is crystal clear, jade green, and a comfortable swimming temperature into late autumn. The local inn and the attractive little fishing harbour of Sennen Cove are only 10 minutes’ walk across the vast expanse of the sandy Blue Flag beach, which is perfect for swimming, water sports and famous for surfing. If you are lucky, you may see dolphins, spot the odd seal or even a basking shark. St Ives and Penzance are also accessible with a car.

This rugged stretch of coast is full of places to explore, and Watergate Bay encourages guests to get out and do just that. Plenty of local influences can be found on the menus at Zacry’s, the hotel restaurant where you will enjoy breakfast each morning, as well as the inviting sea-view bar, The Living Space. There are European and American dishes too, and the summer sees locally caught lobster as one of the star attractions. Fresh décor and great amenities are found in a range of rooms and suites, including those specially designed for families, with separate space for the children. Standard rooms come with TV and DVD, iPod dock, en suite with bathrobes and luxury toiletries, free Wi-Fi and more, and there are bigger and better rooms with balconies, and suites with free-standing baths (right in the window too, so you can really enjoy that view). Another fine feature of Watergate Bay is the swim club, with a 25m infinity pool, a hot tub on the terrace, cardio and treatment rooms and its own café bar. Check out the yoga and pilates classes while you’re there, as well as swim clinics and surf courses to improve your technique in the pool or out at sea. The Beach Hut is another of Watergate Bay’s appealing hangouts, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner just a stone’s throw from the sand. Enjoy a coffee on the deck, a glass of wine inside, or vice versa – it’s a buzzing spot where you can soak up the atmosphere of coastal life. All kinds of events take place throughout the year, including polo on the beach, surfing championships and live music. Needless to say, the hotel is a popular choice for weddings, parties and other private gatherings, with a magnificent cliff-top terrace overlooking the Atlantic giving their event space something extra-inspiring. Barely five minutes from Newquay Airport and with the likes of Padstow, Port Isaac and the Eden Project all easily accessible, Watergate Bay takes the Cornish beach holiday to a whole new level of unforgettable.
