The Truffle
- 0
- 2 nights min stay
£165.00 per night
The curves of Moss, one of five cabins the owners call Truffles, flow inside and out, giving you the relaxing impression that the world has no sharp edges. Even the handcrafted upcycled armchairs are comfortingly rounded, while the hammock is whatever shape you make when you’re dozing in it. Outside, the 15 acres of woodland enhance the calming effect. There’s a private cooking area with an Aquaforno system, including pizza oven and hot water heater, but also a single gas hob for quick cups of tea. A minute or so through the woods you’ll find the bathrooms, which are situated together but exclusive to each Truffle, so you can leave your stuff when you’re done. With board games and books, you could easily hang out in the Truffle for a couple of days, cosy by the wood burning stove watching out for the family of deer that often roam the woods, and the birdlife that thrives all around you. If you’re after a bit of an adventure though, you have Dartmoor one way and the North Cornwall coast the other. Take on epic hikes and climbs, or just ramble at your leisure. There’s a good chance you don’t make it any further than the Tally Ho in Hatherleigh, which is a local favourite getting quite a reputation for its home brewed beer.

Staircases and galleries lead up to the bedrooms on the floors above while comfy sofas invite you to relax and unwind in front of the log-burning fire. Move through to the fully-equipped kitchen, complete with an Aga, coffee machine and large dining table where you can enjoy delicious meals together. You'll find five bedrooms across the barn's three levels, providing plenty of space and flexibility for groups. Next to a sunroom on the ground floor, is a bedroom with a super-king size bed and ensuite bathroom, perfect for those who prefer not to navigate a flight of stairs. Head up to the first floor and you'll find a king size room with a balcony overlooking the valley. There's also a twin room and a family bathroom, a great set-up for families with children. The main bedroom is also on this floor with an ensuite and doors that open onto the deck, perfect for enjoying a morning coffee with views of the surrounding countryside. Head up to the top floor where there's a twin room that makes a great hideaway for the kids. When the sun is shining, make the most of the outdoors and enjoy lazy afternoons out on the deck. Rustle up some lunch on the BBQ, go for a dip in the hot tub or just lie back and relax on one of the sun loungers, all while enjoying the stunning views of the estate's valley. In the summer months, you'll be able to stay out late into the evening, watching the sunset and perhaps doing a bit of stargazing from the comfort of the hot tub. During your stay you will be nestled in a secluded valley, surrounded by 17 acres of picturesque grounds with lots of great things to see and do. Kids will love the indoor games room that features table football and table tennis, and the specialised soft play area caters to children under five, providing a secure and enjoyable space. Kids will also love the large wooden pirate ship featuring decks, the two-storey Wendy House and the wooden tractor with a slide. There’s also a five-acre dog-walking field, and nature lovers will delight in meeting Coulscott's diverse resident animals, numbering over 50 and still growing. These include free-range chickens, charming call ducks, runner ducks, alpacas, pygmy goats, hand-reared sheep, Kune Kune piglets, guinea pigs, mini lop rabbits and orphan lambs during the spring. And finally, within the expansive grounds you also have a five-a-side football pitch, full-size badminton and tennis courts and various games such as croquet, boules and cricket. There’s also the newly added pitch and putt golf course! Old Barn has the rugged landscapes of Exmoor and the stunning beaches of North Devon right on its doorstep, so you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding things to see and do. Start off by exploring the estate, with pretty trails to follow, play areas to entertain the kids and a heated indoor pool for a refreshing way to start the day. Venture out towards the coast and you'll find Combe Martin beach just a mile away, offering a sheltered stretch of water for kayaking and paddleboarding with the opportunity to spot dolphins and seals. The secret cove of Wild Pear is just a little further along the coast or there's Broadsands Beach with its turquoise waters and mysterious caves. The famous beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton Sands are just a little further along the coast, offering world-class surfing spots and miles of golden sand to enjoy. To see a bit more of the coast and learn a bit more about the local marine life, head out on a sea safari from Ilfracombe. You might prefer to explore inland with horse riding, hiking or mountain biking in Exmoor National Park, a trip to the beautiful Arlington Court or a family day out at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park.
