The Carn is nestled on a secluded hill on the idyllic Frith Meadow, with incredible far-reaching views across the valley and hills. The stunning wooden cabin is expertly designed and hand-built by the owners with a big focus on sustainability, using eco-conscious materials like locally sourced wood and wool insulation in its construction. Completely off-grid, the home is powered by solar panels (don’t worry about grey days, there is a backup generator!), and has its own fresh water supply and rainwater tank. With cosy interiors and lots of outdoor living space, it is the perfect haven for rest and relaxation. Stepping into the cabin you can really see how much care and effort has gone into it. From the upcycled furnishings and countless plants to the many well-placed windows providing buckets of natural light and gorgeous country vistas, it really is a magical property. It sleeps up to five in two delightful bedrooms, a master suite with a king-sized bed and an additional room with a double bed and a single bunk over it, ideal for children (a cot is also available on request). When it’s time to eat, guests can make use of the fully equipped kitchen to cook delicious meals, with all the cooking essentials included for your stay. In the colder months, a woodburning stove can be fired up to keep the cabin toasty (firewood and kindling provided), whilst underfloor heating warms cold feet. A real highlight of The Carn is its outdoor living space. The porch is a great place to relax, with outdoor furniture for alfresco dining and a super comfy swing chair to hang around in and spot some of the local wildlife. It’s also where you’ll find the Portuguese bucket shower and sunken bath, the latter ideal for a calming soak under the stars. Down from the porch is an enclosed garden with a fire pit, where guests can sizzle up food on the grill or toast marshmallows as the sun sets. Guests staying at The Carn will receive a welcome pack of locally sourced goodies, including sourdough bread and hand-pressed apple juice. There are other hampers available to order, full of the finest produce. The cabin is surrounded by open countryside, with many fantastic footpaths and trails right on your doorstep. Just make sure to bring wellies and suitable clothes if you fancy exploring. The pretty town of Presteigne - which sits right on the Wales-England border – is a short drive or scenic walk away. Here you’ll find a good selection of independent shops, traditional pubs and excellent restaurants, as well as many popular attractions. And if you fancy a true culinary experience, there is a Michelin starred restaurant at the nearby village of Titley.

Perched deep in the rolling Black Mountains, close to the English/Welsh border, Drovers Brough is truly remote, accessed via an old drovers' path through the trees. Offering peaceful and beautifully designed accommodation for individual travellers or couples, the award winning Drovers Brough is the ultimate self-catering hideaway for people who want to escape the bustle of urban life while retaining underfloor heating, a full kitchen, and architect-designed style. The house itself is pleasingly compact, and finished with timber externally. A large wooden balcony contains a dining table, and boasts beautiful views of the valley, creating a spot where most guests choose to drink their coffee in the morning and plan their day. This area is accessed through folding doors from the main living space, which comprises a kitchen area, dining space and living room, all under a high vaulted ceiling, in a room which extends the full length of the building. The bedroom is accessed via an open staircase. The aesthetic throughout the house is pared back and minimalist, emphasising the views, and creating a homely and harmonious space. The bedroom is finished with plaster, and elsewhere you'll find that walls and surfaces are either whitewashed or timber finished. Despite the simple and subtle design, the house is well equipped with everything you need for a a lengthy break away, with underfloor heating, well designed lighting from solar panels, a wood-burning stove, lashings of high pressure hot water in the fitted bathroom and a kitchen with a fridge-freezer and induction hob. For chilly or rainy nights, there is a television mounted opposite the sofa, while warm summer nights are typically spent down by the firepit, which comes with a cooking grill suspended over it. The house is a mile away from public roads, a haven of birdsong and untroubled wilderness, but a fantastic pub called The Bridge Inn is just five miles away, a good hike. Alternatively, head to The Carpenters Arms in Walterstone, definitely driving distance but worth it for the excellent food. For a real treat, book a table at the Michelin starred Walnut Tree. Outdoors enthusiasts should also try canoeing the Wye, or heading to the Monnow for wild swimming. Closer to home, the neighbouring farm has the only horse-powered cider mill in the UK, and offers tours if you book in advance, as well as sales of their cider and brandy. While the area offers a range of activities, many guests choose to spend the bulk of their time at the house and land. Either reclining in the hammock with a book, grilling some locally raised steak over the fire, or sitting with a glass of cider by the wood-burning stove, waiting for dinner.

This is an ideal spot to socialise in the summer or get to work grilling some local produce with a nice cold drink in your hand. If you're feeling particularly energetic, challenge each other to a game of badminton on the lawn. When bedtime beckons, the three bedrooms all offer super-king size beds with 400 thread count Egyptian linen, guaranteeing a luxurious night’s sleep. Guests staying at the Cider Mill will be perfectly situated in the heart of Herefordshire, with easy access to the outstanding Wye Valley. The local area offers a perfect mix of hill and river walking, or you could take a stroll through the beautiful cider orchards, which are particularly stunning during blossom time. The more active of you can also enjoy some canoeing or fishing out on the picturesque River Wye, or explore the spectacular Brecon Beacons on foot or by bike. You're also in a great spot from which to enjoy other nearby walks amongst the orchards and hedgerows of rural Herefordshire, whilst enjoying far-reaching views from the Malverns to the Black Mountains. You may also want to cross the river and explore the superb Moccas Park National Nature Reserve. The markets towns of Hereford, Hay on Wye and Presteigne are all within a 20-minute drive and offer fantastic independent shopping, farmers' markets and good places to eat. Just up the road you'll find an excellent farm shop full of local produce. There are also plenty of award-winning local pubs in the area. If you wish to explore on foot you can walk from the house down part of the Wye Valley Walk to Brobury Bridge and then onto the Red Lion at Bredwardine. It's a lovely walk and takes about a good hour.
