Fuggle Treehouse will beguile children and adults alike with its charming interior and fabulous amenities. A perfect choice for a stay all year round, this is the ideal retreat in a peaceful Herefordshire wood. Hidden away high up in the canopy, with views over the valley, this heartwarming treehouse has everything you could possibly need for a cosy, atmospheric and delightful family holiday. The interior is light and airy, fully insulated with double glazed windows and underfloor heating. The handcrafted spiral wooden staircase at its centre creates a wonderful point of focus and sums up the atmosphere of the place. There's a very cosy wooden kitchen fully equipped to make delicious meals and whip up gallons of hot chocolate which you can sip by the cosy wood burner. The bedrooms are equally inviting with two king size and one with bunk beds for the kids who will feel like they're in a story book. The beds are made up with crisp linens and snuggly duvets and everywhere you look is wood and nature and comfort. In the morning you can refresh yourselves in the luxurious walk-in rainforest shower before preparing a hearty breakfast to enjoy at the intimate dining table. Take a coffee out on to the veranda and admire the view as you make plans for the day. With 17 acres of grass meadows, hidden paths, tree swings and picnic benches, there is plenty to explore and the kids will love it. There are plenty of activities just for them including bug hunting, den building, sledging (grass or snow!) nature trails and orienteering. It's the stuff of childhood joy. If the weather is just too wet there is a large clubhouse with a TV, table tennis and plenty of board games to keep everyone happy. After a fun day of woodland life head back to your home in the trees and make use of the pizza oven. Once everyone is happy and full, enjoy some stargazing as you sink into the marvellous outdoor copper bath with a big glass of wine. As the stars twinkle above light up the fire pit, grab some blankets and go for another round of marshmallows. For a meal out try The Chase Inn, which is cosy and serves delicious food and ale.

This beautiful cabin/yurt hybrid is right on the edge of a dark sky reserve, so if the skies are clear you'll spot many a constellation. By day, you can walk to the nearby Cat's Back ridge and to the peaks of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park right from your doorstep.When is a yurt not a yurt? When it’s also a cabin. Between the Brecon Beacons and the Wye Valley AONB, and less than two miles from the Welsh border, this hybrid building sets new standards for its purebred canvas brethren. Owners Malik and Emily used their expertise not only as artists, but as travellers and all-round nomads to create Pumla with every detail thought out. Frustrated by the lack of views in conventional yurts, they designed this space to have huge picture windows that stretch the entire front of the building. Perched on the edge of a dark sky reserve amidst six acres of land, darkness offers the twinkle and glisten of the one or two houses dotted in the distance, and clear night skies above. Pumla means ‘to relax’ in isiXhosa, and you’ll find yourself doing just that. Peek through the binoculars, peruse the books, and enjoy the foraging card pack provided inside. Why not hike straight up the hill to enjoy the marvels of the Cat's Back and the Brecon Beacons, then sit amidst twinkling fairy lights in the huge snazzy tin tub, a nod to the agricultural surrounds as they are often found housing animal feed. Washing in the open with aching muscles, what a glorious sense of satisfaction and freedom. Flip a coin to see who’ll jump out and start lunch or dinner, choosing between the wood burner, fully equipped kitchen or some primeval cooking with the tripod and BBQ grill on the firepit. Dine on local regeneratively farmed meat and bask in the emerging wildflower meadow, part of Emily and Malik's rewilding efforts. The site is incredibly secluded, and yet, still has access to so much in the local area. Nearby is Neil Powell Butchers, or Hopes of Longtown village shop – just a 10 minute drive to the South. To rustle up an appetite, the site sits below the Cats Back, a stunning mountain ridge that leads you up to Offa’s Dyke and The Brecon Beacons so you can enjoy a short stomp or lengthy expedition right from your door.

    As you descend into the orchard and find Kingfisher Cabin waiting by the rippling Escley Brook, the trees seem to close around you and shut out the rest of the world. In actual fact, they only shut out the human world, leaving you to enjoy the bustling wildlife of the riverbank and woods all by yourself. As you nap in the hammock, paddle the little rowing boat, sit out on the veranda and even lie in bed, you can watch and listen for everything from otters to owls (and kingfishers of course). There’s even a large charm of goldfinches that make their home in the meadow in summer. The health of the 20 acres of land around you is a testament to the commitment of owners Tessa and Dave. You probably won’t meet them during your secluded stay, but you’ll see their commitment to the environment and their guests everywhere, from the biodiversity of the land to the bore hole-drawn water and a few welcoming touches you’ll discover in the cabin. They’ve also left plenty of information on the area, from their favourite walking routes in the Black Mountains to the simple twenty-minute stroll to the Bridge Inn for lunch or dinner by the riverside. If you’re planning on staying, then it’s a good idea to stock up on your way or at the local shop about a ten-minute drive away, as Kingfisher Cabin is pretty remote. Once you’ve done so though, that remoteness becomes a tranquil blessing, with minimal phone signal and none of the bother of modern life intruding on your dozing, dawdling few days down by the river.

    Perched deep in the rolling Black Mountains, close to the English/Welsh border, Drovers Brough is truly remote, accessed via an old drovers' path through the trees. Offering peaceful and beautifully designed accommodation for individual travellers or couples, the award winning Drovers Brough is the ultimate self-catering hideaway for people who want to escape the bustle of urban life while retaining underfloor heating, a full kitchen, and architect-designed style. The house itself is pleasingly compact, and finished with timber externally. A large wooden balcony contains a dining table, and boasts beautiful views of the valley, creating a spot where most guests choose to drink their coffee in the morning and plan their day. This area is accessed through folding doors from the main living space, which comprises a kitchen area, dining space and living room, all under a high vaulted ceiling, in a room which extends the full length of the building. The bedroom is accessed via an open staircase. The aesthetic throughout the house is pared back and minimalist, emphasising the views, and creating a homely and harmonious space. The bedroom is finished with plaster, and elsewhere you'll find that walls and surfaces are either whitewashed or timber finished. Despite the simple and subtle design, the house is well equipped with everything you need for a a lengthy break away, with underfloor heating, well designed lighting from solar panels, a wood-burning stove, lashings of high pressure hot water in the fitted bathroom and a kitchen with a fridge-freezer and induction hob. For chilly or rainy nights, there is a television mounted opposite the sofa, while warm summer nights are typically spent down by the firepit, which comes with a cooking grill suspended over it. The house is a mile away from public roads, a haven of birdsong and untroubled wilderness, but a fantastic pub called The Bridge Inn is just five miles away, a good hike. Alternatively, head to The Carpenters Arms in Walterstone, definitely driving distance but worth it for the excellent food. For a real treat, book a table at the Michelin starred Walnut Tree. Outdoors enthusiasts should also try canoeing the Wye, or heading to the Monnow for wild swimming. Closer to home, the neighbouring farm has the only horse-powered cider mill in the UK, and offers tours if you book in advance, as well as sales of their cider and brandy. While the area offers a range of activities, many guests choose to spend the bulk of their time at the house and land. Either reclining in the hammock with a book, grilling some locally raised steak over the fire, or sitting with a glass of cider by the wood-burning stove, waiting for dinner.
