The Humble Bee

- 2 nights min stay
£190.00 per night
This might be a human-sized beehive, but there’s no colony of guests, just the two of you. Sip champagne as the steam from the outdoor bath drifts up the rock walls that make the Humble Bee such a hidden spot or fold back the various doorways and let the woodland flow in. Moving between the landings inside, you’ll find thick furs, a day-bed for lounging and on the top floor, a king-size bed that appears suspended in the ceiling. The light from the honeycomb feature wall and heater flickering off reclaimed crates, barrel strapping and rich, dark wood give the hive a sultry, honeyed glow. If you choose to venture out of Humble Bee in search of the sweet nectar of adventure, then the wilderness of Dartmoor is merely a bumble away. Take the short tramp to the Railway cafe or grab bikes from the nearby youth hostel, get a good route from Yvette and range a little further. You’re just a hop from town, so you might hear the nearby park and local school from time to time, but it also means you can drop into the shops of Okehampton then retire to Humble Bee’s kitchen to cook up a storm. There is even a hot tub shared with your neighbours in The Bird Box and Moonbeam Yurt at Honeyside Down. However, it’s in the cosy den of the hive where you’ll likely spend most of your time - soaking in the amazing private outdoor bath and napping and luxuriating in the wonderfully creative habitat of Humble Bee. As featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces on Channel 4.

This unique handcrafted wood house, known as a Truffle, is one of five, spaced out across 15 acres of oak woodland that’s home to a variety of flora and fauna including wild orchids, a young family of deer, buzzards and woodpeckers. As well as an inviting wood burning stove inside, there’s a sheltered outside cooking area with a nifty Aquaforno cooking system that includes a bbq and pizza oven, and a single gas hob so you can make a speedy cup of coffee to get you going in the morning. A short walk through the sun-dappled woodland is the shower block; you’re assigned your own bathroom for your stay so you can leave personal items inside.Lie indoors in your hammock listening to the rain bounce off the Truffle with the door open – nothing smells better than the woodland in the rain – or snuggle next to your wood-burner or around your firepit if it’s chilly. In fine weather, gently swing on the outside hammock; at night you can gaze at the stars through the tree canopy above. A quarter of the site has been returned to nature, and you’ll find ancient hedge banks, a gentle stream and rope swings hanging from trees waiting to be discovered. Although you’re surrounded by a 300-acre sheep farm, Hatherleigh town centre is a short walk away and has two lovely pubs as well as a supermarket, cafe and local farm shop. North Cornwall’s beaches are half an hour away and you’re only a ten-minute drive from the edge of Dartmoor.
