With effortless grace, Great Burrow Stable blends the deep, rich colours of a chic hotel with the peace of the Devon countryside. Inside, you’ll find plush red armchairs, ornate screens and hints of brass picked out by vintage lighting, while outside under the covered porch, nature is left to work her own magic. The dining table and chairs are where you’ll sit in the morning with a coffee, or finish the day with a glass of something while you debate who gets the swing or the bath first. Both are beautiful on a starry night, but equally atmospheric when the rain is drumming on the roof above. While the cabin has all the modern flourishes – fridge, TV, wifi – owners Mary and Justin, who left London in search of a different way of life, have created a space perfect for unhooking from the modern world and truly relaxing. You can hike straight from the door on woodland trails, hit the coast in half an hour, nip over to Dartmoor, or stroll through the woods to the local pub for dinner. If you prefer to cook, then pick up ingredients from Okehampton’s organic grocer, to add to the local milk and the eggs from the hens you’ll see wandering past the cabin. You’ll possibly spot Theo, a neighbour’s horse who lives in the field next door, while all around you the health of lightly tended land means deer, rabbits, owls and woodpeckers are all common sights. All you have to do is decide if you’ll be spotting from the deck recliner, the lounge chairs, the swing or the bath.

Carpenter’s Cabin soothes the tension of modern life right out of you and fills you with the peace of nature. There are rabbits and badgers rustling in the woods, kingfishers streaking over the pond and the sound of the rippling stream in the background. You can gather everyone round the wood-burner in the evening for games, stories and even guitar practice, light the firepit and stargaze in silence or unwind in the wood-fired sauna or hot tub. The welcome hamper introduces you to the amazing local produce, and walking maps of routes surrounding the site and further afield, invite you to explore. There’s the Granite Way cycle path following the railway tracks from Okehampton and even the beautiful beaches at Bude if you need even more to occupy your time.Carpenter’s Cabin was designed by Ben and Jo not only to give you a great experience of nature, but also to show how its possible to live more in harmony with it. Wood-burners, compost loos, local timber and solar power all minimise impact on the environment, while careful stewardship of their land has lead to flourishing wildlife that benefits everything except the plants in the kitchen garden, that need firm but friendly defending from slugs! Ben and Jo can talk you through any aspect of living in an ecologically sound way, and even build you a cabin of your own, but all they really want is for you to come and feel the peace of their slice of nature.

The cottage is located on a huge private estate, and guests will love the fantastic shared facilities at their disposal including the indoor swimming pool, valley views and various play areas for children that make this a fantastic holiday destination both couples and those travelling with little ones. Aylesbury Cottage sleeps four guests across two bedrooms. Entering the property, visitors are welcomed by an open-plan living, kitchen and dining space which allows for family living while maintaining the cosy ambiance within. Cuddle up in front of the Smart TV, and enjoy movie nights with your loved ones, or sit around the extendable dining table with a drink long into the evening. In winter, fire up the log burner and stay toasty and warm throughout your stay. The fully equipped kitchen gives guests the flexibility to cook up some big breakfasts and prepare snacks and other meals for everyone to enjoy. Upstairs, the master bedroom is home to a gorgeous four-poster king-sized bed, with stunning views out of the window. The second twin bedroom is perfect for one or two children to sleep in. The heated indoor pool is easily accessed from your private terrace for a quick dip. Aylesbury Cottage sits on an extensive estate with lots of wonderful facilities. You can wander the vast grounds and see the variety of friendly farm animals on site, or simply stop for a picnic and enjoy the views. Kids will love the indoor soft play area, and the large wooden outdoor play area, as well as the heated indoor swimming pool. You can also cook al fresco on your terrace using veg from the kitchen garden and local BBQ packs from the honesty shop, or make use of the games room, which has a table tennis table, table football and cosy sofas. Throughout your stay you also have access to an honesty shop for additional provisions, a huge fire pit to toast marshmallows on, and electric vehicle charging point. There are also a further two cottages on-site that guests can book alongside Aylesbury Cottage. The three cottages combined can sleep up to 10 people, and dining can be set up to accommodate this within Aylesbury Cottage, offering large groups a delightful Devon retreat. There are also larger properties sleeping up to 15 available at Coulscott House Holiday Cottages. Nearby, the choice of scenic walking trails and beautiful beaches will be more than enough for some wonderful family days out. Guests can try their hands at watersports locally, or simply relax on the beach, soaking up the sun. Beaches that are a 'must-visit' include Woolacombe (Sunday Times Britain’s Best Beach 2021), Croyde and Saunton Sands, among many others. There is also plenty of adventure to be had for kids of all ages, such as horse riding, sea kayaking safaris, surf lessons, coasteering, wildlife parks and more.
