The Truffle
- 0
- 2 nights min stay
£165.00 per night
The curves of Moss, one of five cabins the owners call Truffles, flow inside and out, giving you the relaxing impression that the world has no sharp edges. Even the handcrafted upcycled armchairs are comfortingly rounded, while the hammock is whatever shape you make when you’re dozing in it. Outside, the 15 acres of woodland enhance the calming effect. There’s a private cooking area with an Aquaforno system, including pizza oven and hot water heater, but also a single gas hob for quick cups of tea. A minute or so through the woods you’ll find the bathrooms, which are situated together but exclusive to each Truffle, so you can leave your stuff when you’re done. With board games and books, you could easily hang out in the Truffle for a couple of days, cosy by the wood burning stove watching out for the family of deer that often roam the woods, and the birdlife that thrives all around you. If you’re after a bit of an adventure though, you have Dartmoor one way and the North Cornwall coast the other. Take on epic hikes and climbs, or just ramble at your leisure. There’s a good chance you don’t make it any further than the Tally Ho in Hatherleigh, which is a local favourite getting quite a reputation for its home brewed beer.

£148.50 per night
The colour and light of this romantic retreat are a beautiful blend of art and craft, which is what you’d expect in a cabin built by an artist and a craftsman. Nick made most of the furniture and Dolly’s creativity brings the colour, along with a scattering of finds from their life in Mexico and extensive travels. The style is easily matched by the substance, with a big double bed, fully-equipped kitchen and modern shower room with Mexican tiles and a handmade copper sink, meaning you have everything you need in the intimate, characterful space. There’s also bunk space cleverly installed above the sofa so you can bring the kids. Just outside the cabin you’ll find Jackson’s stand out feature, the private wood-fired hot tub surrounded by trees and shrubbery in a corner of the garden. With the lanterns lit and the stars out above you, a late night soak adds an extra dash of magic to a restorative, romantic break. If you’re not content to spend time just soaking and lounging, Nick and Dolly, who live on site can include you in their summer Monday pizza events using the great earth wood fired oven. They can also give you pointers on exploring south Devon, from canoeing on the river Dart, walking the Kingsbridge estuary to wild hikes on Dartmoor. There’s great surfing at Bantham beach, hidden coves all along the coastline and quaint country villages with pubs serving superb local ale. At the end of a day the cabin welcomes you home to pull up a chair by the wood burner and enjoy the quiet as you wait for the hot tub to heat.

Carpenter's Cabin
- 0
- 2 nights min stay
£180.00 per night
Carpenter’s Cabin soothes the tension of modern life right out of you and fills you with the peace of nature. There are rabbits and badgers rustling in the woods, kingfishers streaking over the pond and the sound of the rippling stream in the background. You can gather everyone round the wood-burner in the evening for games, stories and even guitar practice, light the firepit and stargaze in silence or unwind in the wood-fired sauna or hot tub. The welcome hamper introduces you to the amazing local produce, and walking maps of routes surrounding the site and further afield, invite you to explore. There’s the Granite Way cycle path following the railway tracks from Okehampton and even the beautiful beaches at Bude if you need even more to occupy your time.Carpenter’s Cabin was designed by Ben and Jo not only to give you a great experience of nature, but also to show how its possible to live more in harmony with it. Wood-burners, compost loos, local timber and solar power all minimise impact on the environment, while careful stewardship of their land has lead to flourishing wildlife that benefits everything except the plants in the kitchen garden, that need firm but friendly defending from slugs! Ben and Jo can talk you through any aspect of living in an ecologically sound way, and even build you a cabin of your own, but all they really want is for you to come and feel the peace of their slice of nature.
