The steps up to Treetops Treehouse lift you clear into the canopy and you’re suddenly alone with the peaceful breeze through the leaves, the occasional skittering squirrel and only the good kind of twitter. The temptation is to fire up the wood-burner, settle on the sofa and crack into the local welcome cider, but the rest of the treehouse is worth exploring. Upstairs you’ll find the king-size bed and in another room downstairs the huge copper bath, where you can lie back and soak up the quiet as the stress just drains away. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and there’s a barbecue outside on the deck, but if you fancy a treat then book in at the superb restaurant of The Fox & Hounds and head across the grounds for dinner. When you come back, sink into the bean bags in the secret cubby hole on the deck and watch the sun set on the fishing lake and the trees of Heywood Forest as the local train chugs past beneath you. Treetops Treehouse is set in the North Devon Biosphere Reserve, with the River Taw just below. If you want to leave the car behind, Eggesford train station is just a 5 minute walk away, and the Tarka Line runs to Barnstaple in one direction and Exeter in the other. As well as fishing on the lake and river, there’s the Tarka Trail that’ll take you on foot or by bike through charming villages and beautiful countryside via the odd homely pub. You can hit the coast for surfing, coasteering and a dip in the sea, or just spend the whole time lounging in the treehouse, sipping champagne and looking out over the pond.

The open-plan cabin’s unique shape, hand-crafted by Jo and Ben, lets you breeze in and out to the woods, wander to the crackling fire pit and dip your toes in the stream, take a dip in the wood fired hot tub, or just enjoy the rocking chair on the veranda, all while surrounded by the sounds of wildlife. A genuine love of, and commitment to, the environment runs through every choice, from the sustainable materials used to make the cabin, to the top end solar power system, a dry toilet and even the little ladders in the pond for frogs and newts. In the Den there are games, jigsaws and a library including recipe books full of tips for getting the most out of the BBQ and superb local produce. On booking, you will be sent a digital guidebook which works offline, with all the info you need to get the most from your stay - maps to guide you along the nearby lanes and footpaths, details of secret Dartmoor swimming spots, tips on the best pasty shop. You can nip out to the glorious beaches at Bude, just forty minutes away, or take the Granite Way cycle path from Okehampton along the old railway lines. The Den is an island of beautiful design, floating in the treetops next to sister space The Hideaway Treehouse and perfectly blending the wild and the indulgent. In the daytime, throw open the doors and the breakfast bar window, sit out on the deck and live surrounded by nature. When the night draws in, close it all up and let the wood burner and underfloor heating turn the lounge into a cosy space for napping, reading or board games. As for the four-person jacuzzi, it is in an amazing decked space at the lower level and has a separate drinks fridge-freezer and lounge area. Cooking options are equally versatile, with a BBQ outdoors and fully equipped kitchen inside. While it’s an incredibly romantic spot for couples, The Den is also perfect for a family of four. One room has a king-size bed and another two full-size bunks and the deck is guarded by a rail, so toddlers can wander free. You can even bring the dog, so nobody has to miss out.Once you’re in The Den, you may not want to leave, but if you do head out then you still might not get further than the grounds of Pickwell Manor. There’s a campfire area, an animal zone, croquet lawn and even the laundry room gets great feedback for the amazing view. Day trips could see you swimming, paddle boarding or surfing at Woolacombe Bay, or heading out along the coastal path from nearby Putsborough beach. A half-hour walk into Georgeham brings you to a couple of great pubs, with The Rock Inn a great choice for a special meal and The King’s Arms for a pint in the garden and music on Fridays. And because The Den is your own little world, you can fire up the tub whenever you get back and end the day with a dip.
