There’s a campfire area, an animal zone, croquet lawn and even the laundry room gets great feedback for the amazing view. Day trips could see you swimming, paddle boarding or surfing at Woolacombe Bay, or heading out along the coastal path from nearby Putsborough beach. A half-hour walk into Georgeham brings you to a couple of great pubs, with The Rock Inn a great choice for a special meal and The King’s Arms for a pint in the garden and music on Fridays. The colour and light of this romantic retreat are a beautiful blend of art and craft, which is what you’d expect in a cabin built by an artist and a craftsman. Nick made most of the furniture and Dolly’s creativity brings the colour, along with a scattering of finds from their life in Mexico and extensive travels. The style is easily matched by the substance, with a big double bed, fully-equipped kitchen and modern shower room with Mexican tiles and a handmade copper sink, meaning you have everything you need in the intimate, characterful space. There’s also bunk space cleverly installed above the sofa so you can bring the kids. Just outside the cabin you’ll find Jackson’s stand out feature, the private wood-fired hot tub surrounded by trees and shrubbery in a corner of the garden. With the lanterns lit and the stars out above you, a late night soak adds an extra dash of magic to a restorative, romantic break. • Great Burrows Stable

    • 4
    • 2 nights min stay

With effortless grace, Great Burrow Stable blends the deep, rich colours of a chic hotel with the peace of the Devon countryside. Inside, you’ll find plush red armchairs, ornate screens and hints of brass picked out by vintage lighting, while outside under the covered porch, nature is left to work her own magic. The dining table and chairs are where you’ll sit in the morning with a coffee, or finish the day with a glass of something while you debate who gets the swing or the bath first. Both are beautiful on a starry night, but equally atmospheric when the rain is drumming on the roof above. While the cabin has all the modern flourishes – fridge, TV, wifi – owners Mary and Justin, who left London in search of a different way of life, have created a space perfect for unhooking from the modern world and truly relaxing. You can hike straight from the door on woodland trails, hit the coast in half an hour, nip over to Dartmoor, or stroll through the woods to the local pub for dinner. If you prefer to cook, then pick up ingredients from Okehampton’s organic grocer, to add to the local milk and the eggs from the hens you’ll see wandering past the cabin. You’ll possibly spot Theo, a neighbour’s horse who lives in the field next door, while all around you the health of lightly tended land means deer, rabbits, owls and woodpeckers are all common sights. All you have to do is decide if you’ll be spotting from the deck recliner, the lounge chairs, the swing or the bath.
